Walking on the marked trails of the peninsula you will see the famous abbey of Tihany, lavender fields, herd of grey cattle, Inner Lake, geyser field, forests and glades. And when the peak of the peninsula is reached you will find the lake stretching in front of you!

Badacsony (60 km)

The former volcano is peacefully towers over the northern coast of Balaton and is mostly famous for the wine grown on its sunny hillsides. So after climbing up to the peak we may quench our thirst with original „Badacsonyi szürkebarát” (Pinot Gris)!

Basalt organ pipes of Szent György (St George) mountain. A large part of the northern shore of Lake Balaton was formed by volcanic activity. On the side of the basalt caps of the hills the flowing lava solidified in pillar form: as if enormous organ pipes were sounding praises to the beauty of the landscape! The unique basalt phenomena are reaching up to 414m high – so we may enjoy the wonderful view stretching from the Keszthely Mountains, the „Witness Mountains” of the Balaton uplands until Somló.

Káli basin (55 km)

Amongst the dormant volcanoes lying in the basin you descend into another world. Above the reeds of the salt pond water-fowl call, cowbells ring in the pastures and you find incredible calm and peace in the small, inviting villages. At the edge of the basin stone idols – formed by hot volcanic torrents of lava and by the wind – guard the peace of the land. This area is called the stone sea. At the farm in Salföld we can make friends with domestic animals and enjoy the horse- and archery performances from May till September.

2. Remains of the historical past

Even the Romans liked to rest at Lake Balaton and the storms of history have not avoided the region either – leaving plenty of memories behind. The beautiful capital of the country, Budapest is also within an hour drive, so there is really much to see and discover!

Beside the monastery dominating the peak of the peninsula we may enjoy a great view over the lake – a view that has been remembered by many poets and writers. Around the church we can walk among old houses, have some original Hungarian meals at one of the fine restaurants or look around in the small shops offering local craft products.

Our proposal for walking and bicycle tour

1. Walking in Siófok

Siófok offers numerous pleasant walks and interesting sights for its visitors. We propose you one possible route here. We start this right next to our hotel where we find the port of the sailing boats, as well as one of the characteristic buildings of the town, the Meteorological Observatory, – both located at the western pier of the port. This observatory gives the first storm signal for the whole Balaton region. Yard of the station is decorated by Miklos Borsos’s statue titled “Urania”.

Scenic spot of the port is still the Sió-lock being built together with it. Here a memorial tablet brings it to our mind that the first lock allowing regulation of water level of the lake has been made on the basis of Károly Klein’s and László Botka’s designs in 1863.

After crossing the Sió channel we see the Music School right on the left hand corner with a statue of Béla Bartók – world-famous Hungarian composer – in front of it. Here we turn to the left and walk towards a very interesting scenic spot, the port of Siófok, from where the scheduled pleasure boats put forth. The busiest boat traffic occurs here on the Balaton. The monument erected to 100th 125th and 150th anniversary of steam boating of the Balaton stands in the park in front of building of the port. On the Northern part stands the statue of Vilt Tibor, title: Mermaid of Lake Balaton (1974).

In the park next to it one of the sights of the city, Rose Garden can be seen, which revives again by the careful work of the gardeners. The end of the Cross lake swimming competition is also here, that’s why in 1997 the city put up a statue to Kálmán Szekrényessy, who was the first man who swam across the lake.

The old Sió and Hullám (Wave) hotels are situated on the front of the Petőfi promenade, among ancient walls of which many noted writers and artists made their appearance. On the right side of the promenade we can fall in with popular walking place of Siófok, the Jókai park. There are lots of people seeking for softening under the cool leafy boughs and shady trees. On several kilometer long shrubby promenades and on open beaches of extensive area of the ‘Aranypart’ (Golden Shore) the visitor finds thousands of people seeking for pleasures of summer, resting and recreation.

But exceedingly beautiful eastern basin of the Balaton, with waving mounts of the opposite shore, also bursts upon the visitor’s sight. Turning back on the Batthyány Street among beautiful old villas we make our way back towards the Sió channel and the hotel.

2. Tour offers by bicycle or on foot in Siófok and its surroundings

We have completed the following tours in Siófok and around there for you: Some of the tours begin in Zamárdi or Balatonföldvár. You can reach these places by car, train or using the special bike-road even by bike. Zamárdi is located 10 km while Balatonföldvár is located 15 km from Siófok.

Walking tour in Töreki (9 km) and cycling tour (23 km)

The nature conservation area called Töreki Halastavak (fish ponds) lies west of our hotel (about 4 km) and it is located in a valley found at right angles to the Lake Balaton. The most important value of this area is the brook Cinege and the 10 lakes were built on it. The characteristic of this area is the very varied environment – lake, marsh, mowing areas and wood what can give safe place for living for many valuable plants and animals as well. There is a special 9-kilometer-long path here to show these plants and animals to you with Hungarian, German and Latin notice-boards. For example you can see here a swallow’s colony and the living place of some special Hungarian birds. Tourists can have a rest and have their snack at some rest-stops on the lake and in the wood. You can go back to Siófok by bike if you use the red footpath from Töreki.

Cycling tour to Siójut (Siófok Siójut – Balatonszabadi – Szabadifürdő – Siófok, 21 km)

On this tour we have the chance to taste the atmosphere of the “Somogy hills”. We start our journey on the newly built bicycle road leading on the shores of the Sió channel. When reaching the village Siójut, we cross the bridge to Balatonszabadi and there following the road we return to Siófok. Here we turn to the left onto the “Lake Balaton” bicycle road and cycle back to the hotel. If you feel like having a longer trip you can choose between two turn-out tracks: one is to follow the bicycle road until the end (a few kilometer) and turn back, the other is to cycle to Ádánd, see the Hetye church ruin and then turn back to Siójut.

Cycling tour to Balatonendréd (Zamárdi – Szántódpuszta – Balatonendréd – Zamárdi, 20 km)

You must turn to the west from the railway station of Zamárdi and go along while you reach the first station of this tour, Szántódpuszta, and its very famous historic farmer buildings what were built in the XVIII – XXI century. The 30 buildings what you can find here can show you the original picture of Hungarian farms. Exhibitions, aquarium with the animals of the Lake Balaton and souvenir shop, in summer riding show wait the tourists here. Then turn to the south to Tab and ride along between the hills. After the Brook Gyugyi turn left and take the reed footpath and ride to Balatonendred. You can find here the exhibition about Hungarian lace and about how it was made. (Kájel csipkeház, 30 Kossuth Street). You can get back on the same road.

Cycling tour to the Castle Kereki (Balatonföldvár – Kereki – Kőrőshegy – Balatonföldvár, 20 km)

This is a very exciting tour for walking or cycling tours too. You can see the only one ruins of a castle in Somogy county. The red footpath begins at the railway-station in Balatonföldvár and finishes in the middle of Kereki. After you leave the road you can ride or walk between the wonderful woods in the special area of Somogy. Soon you can see the Fejérkő castle or as it is called Kereki castle. The history of the castle is not known very well it is supposed to be built in the XIV -XV century. In a fight with turkish-soldiers the castle was blown up but many of the walls still stand there. You can see some beautiful old doors and gates and some 10 metre-high walls. Tourists can travel back to Balatonföldvár by bus through Kőröshegy.
